Explorations In The Sierra Nevadas

An Icy Kind of Claim Trip

Ryan and I made it to the claim this past weekend…it was covered in very dense snow! Some parts were flat out icy. Not surprisingly, it took an extremely long time to make the trek. Hopefully we’ll post some more details over at The 09ers soon! Until then, here’s another photo:

9/13 Trip to Serendipity

A few photos from our trip to Serendipity last week. More here. My boss Jim and my pal Carlyn also made the trip up with me and Ryan. We strolled through old Damascus and trekked down to Ryan’s hockey stick discovery monument in Serendipity. I wound up taking a spill when a tree root I [...]

Humbug Canyon

About a month ago I took a hike to Euchre Bar from the north side of the North Fork near the town of Alta. My prior attempt from the south end, which I have yet to write about, was a complete failure. But with failure comes  good things, especially since it was that trip [...]

RIP Russell Towle; Writer, Mathematician, Naturalist

A few weeks ago I received this disturbing email
Hello everyone.
Let me start by saying that this is NOT Russell Towle writing you
this message. This is his son, Greg Towle. I’m writing to you all
because, last night, my father died in a car accident.
This message is being sent out to all of my father’s contacts. Some
of [...]

Back at it.

Last Thursday I called the US Forestry Service to double check on the status of the wild fires and the closure of Foresthill Divide. Thankfully, the fires have been 100% contained and everything was back open again. Since a lot of my my friends took off this weekend for Seafair (Seattle), I figured it would be a perfect [...]

New Boots!

I finally got new waterproof boots! Having wet feet for 5+ hours was a horrible experience. Pretty excited about these. Since REI so close I figured I should form over the mula for a membership, hopefully it was a good choice.

Claim on Fire

Two weekends ago my friend Elise and I decided to sacrifice our Friday night so we could leave at the crack of dawn up to Serendipity to get a full days worth of mining in. Being that she is from Alaska, this was something that was right up her alley.
After a riveting drive up I-80 and through my favorite [...]

BLM Updates Claim Record

The  claim has now officially made it into the BLM’s database.

Euchre Bar Success

A couple months ago I wanted to go check out Euchre Bar from the south access trail head. Using the directions from the governments website, I thought it would be easy enough to find without getting exact GPS coordinates. We arrived at the access road about 15 miles past Forresthill. After what we thought was [...]

California Fires

For the past couple weeks, northern California has been on fire. Luckily the claim is safe, by about 10miles. I was able to catch some of the strange things the smoke did to the sky. These were taken at my old house in Santa Clara.
